In recognition of World Naturist Day, and with a little trepidation, members of Oakwood Sun Club are preparing to welcome visitors to a barbecue and children’s treasure hunt at their grounds on Sunday 4 June.

Oakwood has occupied 5 acres of wood and grassland beside the M25 near Romford and Brentwood for the last 46 years. In early June the trees will be at their greenest and the woods full of birdsong. Most of the members live in the Brentwood and Havering areas but it caters for families from Mile End to Southend. Naturism can be a rather lazy occupation - dozing in the sun, chatting with friends, enjoying a barbecue and a glass of wine as the sun goes down - but the club also provides a swimming pool, a children’s play area and facilities for more competitive members. There are courts for miniten (a form of tennis using short bats), petanque, volleyball and badminton. Indoors they can play pool, table tennis and darts. The club also runs a regular winter program of social events.

Club chairman, Jim Archer, describes the first steps in naturism as “a bit like getting out of bed on a fine weekend morning - something to be put off but not so bad when it is done. There are no thunderclaps: no one looks appalled: no one even laughs. Afterwards you begin to appreciate the benefits”.
