BRITISH NATURISM TACKLES LOCAL GOVERNMENT WHITE PAPER

28 November 2006

Early in November it was discovered that the Department for Community and Local Government intended to make changes to the way the byelaws work which would have had a very serious effect on beach naturism. Following a lengthy correspondence between British Naturism and the Department for Community and Local Government they have finally accepted that changes are required. We will need to keep a close eye on them because they could change their minds but for now the danger is over and no further action is required at this time.

They intend to give all councils, even parish councils, the power to create byelaws without any requirement for approval by anyone. What is more the byelaws will be enforced using Fixed Penalty Notices. Fortunately councils need an enabling power and we have managed to persuade the DCLG that "regulate, so far as decency requires, the costumes to be worn by bathers;" should be repealed.

If they change their minds then we will be mounting a campaign. If you come across any examples of stupid byelaws, byelaws being used against naturists or anything else that might be helpful please pass it on to the Research and Liaison Officer at British Naturism. We need to be prepared.

A more detailed account can be found on the British Naturism website www.british-naturism.org.uk
