LIFE'S A (NUDE) BEACH!

23 June 2008

British Naturism announce 5 open days on the UK’s naturist beaches this summer

British Naturism (BN), the UK’s internationally recognised naturist organisation, is to host or be involved in 5 separate days on officially designated naturist beaches around the coast of the UK this summer.

The beaches - in Dorset, Gywnedd, Norfolk, East Sussex and Hampshire - will give as many people as possible the opportunity to attend their closest beach and first-timers are especially welcome. There’s also the chance to make more of it with 3 separate naturist events taking place one weekend in July in the South West.

Officials from BN will be in attendance, offering light refreshments, organising sports and games, and providing information about naturism in the UK and abroad.

British Naturism Chairman, Richard Daniels, said:
“Naturism is now an accepted lifestyle and holiday choice in the UK, with more and more people realising that clothes are not always essential. There is no greater place than a beach to discover that naturism is a comfortable, healthy, relaxing, enjoyable and perfectly normal thing to do. We hope that plenty of people will come and enjoy themselves and find out more about the thriving naturist scene in the UK.

“It’s also a perfect opportunity for those that have never tried naturism before. Whether you are on your own or with a group or family, you’ll receive a warm welcome and meet lots of like-minded people. Contrary to what you might think, no-one is forced to undress and newcomers are given time to feel comfortable enough to strip off.

Come and try it – you have nothing to lose but your tan lines!"

Notes for Editors
• British Naturism (BN) is the UK’s officially recognised naturist organisation. It exists to support and unite naturists around the UK and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2004, although previous incarnations have been in existence since the 1930s.

• Amongst the aims of BN are to campaign for more naturist places to be made available and to protect naturists against discrimination and Victorian attitudes to the human body.

• Fact – simply being naked in a public place is not against the law. Various pieces of legislation and common law are often mentioned in connection with naturism but they are not relevant.

• In the UK, there are over 130 sun clubs, swim clubs and holiday resorts and 12 officially designated naturist beaches, with many more being used regularly by naturists. Membership of BN is around 13,000 people with up to 100,000 more being members of clubs affiliated to BN. The calendar of naturist events – not all run by British Naturism – is packed for 2008.

• YBN (Young British Naturists) has a membership of young men and women between the ages of 16 and 30 who get together at clubs and beaches many weekends. They represented the UK at the International Naturist Federation (INF) Youth Rally held in Holland in 2008 and hosted the Rally themselves in the UK in May 2007 – see www.british-naturism.org.uk/news/detail.asp?article_ID=48 for details.

• Naturism is good for you. Naturists report improvements in well-being, stress, chronic illness, self-esteem and body image. It’s also a sensible choice of dress when the weather is warm. Naturists are normal people. The only difference between activities inside and outside of naturism is the dress code. See FAQs about naturism here www.british-naturism.org.uk/pages/pages.asp?page_ID=39

• BN co-produced Bare Britain, with Lifestyle Press in June 2005, a guidebook to naturism and naturist places in the UK. It is available in bookshops up and down the country, a landmark step for a book on this subject, and has become a best-seller.

• British Naturism have adopted the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) as their President’s Charity of the Year. We are raising funds and awareness and working with them to raise money for their causes. www.mcsuk.org.
